Canada Rocks!

I am—and will always be—a proud Canadian. It’s a sentiment that many Canadians have always felt, but one we need to shout from the rooftops now more than ever. With Trump’s rhetoric about absorbing Canada as America’s 51st state, attempting to silence the LGBTQ community and his threats of tariffs that could significantly impact Canadian businesses—especially small businesses like mine—now is the time to come together, stand up, and support Canada.

Recently, there have been many strong messages in support of Canada. One that stood out to me came from Canadian Men's soccer coach, Jesse Marsch (who, ironically, is American). In response to Trump’s repeated claims about Canada becoming a U.S. state, he said:

"As an American, I’m ashamed of the arrogance and disregard that we’ve shown one of our historically oldest, strongest, and most loyal allies. Canada is a strong, independent nation that’s deep-rooted in decency. It’s a place that values high ethics and respect, unlike the polarized, disrespectful, and often now hate-fueled climate that’s in the U.S."

Well said!

Lloyd Axworthy, former foreign minister and current chair of the World Refugee and Migration Council, recently published a particularly sobering opinion piece in The Globe and Mail, drawing parallels between our current situation dealing with “an uber-President who seeks to erode Canada’s sovereignty and absorb us into his imperfect union” and the lead-up to the war in Ukraine. He urges Canada to take these threats seriously, pointing out that Trump is not interested in our social safety net, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, or our history of cultural tolerance—but in our resources: our minerals, water, oil, and Arctic region. In this article, as well as in his piece in Policy Magazine, he outlines several national and international strategies Canada should pursue. I truly hope our politicians are listening and taking action—SOON!

What I’ve been struggling with is this: what can individual Canadians like me do to protect our sovereignty?

I have always been a strong supporter of buying local and Canadian—whether at the supermarket, when purchasing clothing, or when selecting household goods. Now, I plan to go further: I will analyze my investments and shift away from American companies. I will vote for candidates who are committed to strengthening Canada’s democracy. I will stay informed and help educate others about Canada’s strength and independence.

AND I have recently decided to use my artistic voice to celebrate Canada and share its beauty with all who will listen.

I’ve started drawing everything that makes Canada special to me: fresh water, clean air, mountains, the sea, outdoor adventures, and the friendships that define us. When I included words from our national anthem in my artwork, it solidified my resolve to help Canada remain Glorious and Free.

I invite you to join me, whether by choosing to buy Canadian, supporting leaders who prioritize our sovereignty, or simply spreading awareness. Together, we can ensure Canada remains the True North Strong and Free!
